The Hardest Part

Today we took Lily to the vet for her consult to discuss her options. I went in thinking I was okay with my decision and that everything was going to work out, but making the call was more difficult that I anticipated. The doctor informed us that Lily’s form of cancer had moved into her lymph nodes. I asked if there was a way to take the lymph node that it had invaded out, but she told us that all of the lymph nodes are connected like a computer network. It has already reached all of them; however it chooses to stay in this one above her arm. The doctor told us that the reason that the wound in her arm isn’t healing is due to the cancer in her cells. It won’t allow it to heal. Please excuse the gory picture.

She also told us that she is going to take the arm as far up as possible so that the time it take to come back is either eliminated or prolonged. Since it is in her lymph nodes the cancer will, unfortunately, come back. It can come back like it did this time, as a wound on her skin, or it can come back with a vengeance and attack her spleen or liver. I pray that doesn’t happen! Her surgery is scheduled for Tuesday, May 3, 2016. They sent a blood test off this morning to see how far it had spread. The doctor told us that she was wagging her tail the entire time she took the blood.

When we brought her in the first time, the doctor told us not to worry until she did. . . She told us today that she was worried. I pray that God take pity on my sweet angel. I’m not quite ready to give her up yet. IMG_0007

  1. She looks like a sweetie. Don’t worry, the tumor on her leg is not gory. We all get used to this with our pets and the amputations. Your little one will do fine with the amputation. I hope it gives you a lot more happy times before the cancer has time to spread. Is your vet an oncologist? If not, you might want to consider a second opinion.

  2. Sorry this is turning out this way, but it doesn’t sound like either you or Lily are ready to give up. Amputation seems scary, but think of how Lily’s life will be improved without that sore, which has to hurt. Even if her life is only extended by a period of months, having that time without the pain would be a blessing to Lily. And you never know with cancer, when it returns is a roll of the dice (oh, and Lily doesn’t really care – she just wants the pain of the leg to get better). Enjoy the weekend, and we will all be behind you on Tuesday.

  3. I am sorry to hear that this is turning out the way it is. Cancer is a crap shoot. Now saying that none have a time stamp on our butts. So with that being said. Lily won’t know how long she has or if the cancer will even come back so not having that painful leg hanging around will be a weight off of her.

  4. Gosh! Just catching up on the blogs of Lily…the ADORABLE LILY!! OMD! She is so cute!!

Ditto everything Otis’s mom said. This whole journey is different for every dog because every dog is different! Lilyis not a statistic and she doesn’t care about statistics, or diagnosis or any of that stuff!

Lily is living in the moment and doesn’t worry about the tomorrows or days on a calendar. Other than that bum leg, she feels great! And she will feel even better when that painful leg is gone!!

Take deep breaths, keep things chunked down and know that all is well in Lily’s world!

Stay connected! Recovery is no picnic for a couple of weeks. We’re right here by your side ro help you get through it. But once recovery takes place you will be so delighted to see her sparkle come back bigger and brighter than before!

Not sure if you are consulting with a. Oncologist or not. They could help you develop treatment plans after the amputation. Is your regular vet doing the surgery or a specialist? Don’t mean to be asking so many questions! I guess at least the node with this leg will be taken out and sent for a pathology report?

Now get back to loving and spoiling that sweet girl! That’s all that she cares about…and being with you! 🙂

    Love ro all!
